Early research
experience can have a significant impact on a student's
intellectual development.
At Brown, the number of
undergraduate students engaged in high-level research with our
faculty members has been increasing. Independent Study
Projects (ISPs), such as the one in which Suvadip Bose '06 is
engaged with Dr. Richard Hopkins, give students a chance to
explore topics about which they are excited with professors
who share their interests.
Brown seeks to
expand two key programs—Undergraduate Teaching and
Research Assistantships (UTRAs) and Group Research Projects (GRPs).
An UTRA gives an undergraduate the opportunity to work
one-on-one with a faculty member to conduct research and
develop new courses and educational materials. In a GRP,
students receive course credit for working with a professor on
a collaboratively defined research project in the professor's
area of inquiry.
Your gift to the
Brown Annual Fund helps to expand research opportunities
like ISPs, GRPs, and UTRAs, giving more undergraduate students
access to these valuable educational experiences.

"Suv's Independent Study Project has become a two-year
commitment to bioengineering a new type of heart valve. He is
experiencing the translation of his research from bench-top to
surgery. He will also be first author of a peer-reviewed
article and have opportunities to coauthor other papers."
